Zerus was not at all an individual born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He was born to the lowest of the empire’s noble houses. Moreover, even for the tail-end of nobility, their house was a far cry from being wealthy.
Because they didn’t have any territory that could be described decent, their main source of income was his father’s meager wages from serving in the imperial court. As such, they were barely able to maintain the absolute minimum appearance expected of a noble house.
And although Zerus was the eldest son, the constant power struggles within the court meant he could lose his place in it all too easily. His future as a nobleman was even at risk. Rising through the ranks was out of the question.
But then, his bleak life turned around when he received a rite of blessing. It was revealed then that he had a Gift: the [Great Fortune] Gift. Just as its name would imply, the Gift would bring immense luck to its bearer. Thanks to that, it was no longer impossible for him to climb to an important post.
Before long, his younger sister became the empress and bore a son that had a claim to the throne. And soon enough, he had successfully installed his young nephew as the new emperor and was directing the country as he pleased.
“Yes, that’s right…I have the [Great Fortune] Gift…! Even when things look dire, I always came out on top! This should be no different…!”
He brought out the Mecha-dragon—which wasn’t yet completely repaired—and confronted the intruders, all the while never doubting his chances at victory.
“I will eliminate Suldan here and place all the blame on these intruders! I do that and the whole empire will see me as a hero! A hero they’ll accept to be their new emperor…! Kuhaha…fuhahahaha!”
And then, despite his surprise at the sight of the Mecha-dragon’s laser beam being fended off with a mere shield, he didn’t lose his presence of mind.
“But no matter, you can’t possibly defend against more. This time, I’ll end it for sure!”
“Hello”
All of a sudden though, he heard a voice from behind him. He turned his head around and found a young man that was among the intruders.
“Huh? ——-!? W-w-w-w-w-what are you doing here!?”
In the face of something truly unthinkable, Zerus was so surprised he felt his heart stop beating. After all, once the entrance to the cockpit was sealed, it should have been impossible to get inside. Unexpected didn’t even begin to describe the presence of an enemy here.
“Unlike with the Giant Soldiers, it’s quite spacious here, isn’t it?”
The lad said something inane and made Zerus even more confused by the second.
“Ah, but when you’re seated like that, I suppose the Mecha-dragon is considered an equipment and I won’t be able to take you outside, will I?”
“…! Listen here, you! How did you get in hereeee!?”
Zerus was confused, but almost by instinct, he still moved his body. He unfastened the belt keeping him in place, stood up, and leapt to get rid of the boy.
Zerus, someone who didn’t routinely exercised, had so little strength that one might wonder if he was truly an adult. But against a boy not much older than Emperor Suldan, even Zerus should have more than enough strength to overpower the said boy.
Perhaps thanks to his [Great Fortune] Gift, the arm Zerus swung traveled in a near perfect arc and made direct contact with the boy’s face.
“It hurts…or not. This is just a body double. Anyway, got you.”
“!?”
The boy frowned but only for a moment. The boy immediately said something as though nothing had just happened and then grabbed Zerus by the arm.
“Now that you’re out of your seat, I think this should work now.”
And in the next moment, the scenery around Zerus changed completely.
From being inside the Mecha-dragon’s cockpit, he now found himself somehow staring at that very Mecha-dragon. To make matters worse, he was surrounded by the intruders.
“Looks like things went well. Like I thought, whether you’re seated there or not matters.”
“W-what’s going on!? Is this some illusion!?”
“It’s not an illusion. I just moved you here with teleportation.”
Zerus asked so in a raised voice, but the boy once again answered only with something inane.
